Two readers sent us photos and memories from the past 50 years. We share them here:
Randy Hopson’s mother has kept page 9 from the June 10, 1994 Ponte Vedra Recorder in a scrapbook. Her son appeared in the Footprints column. The text reads:
Chance of a Lifetime
Imagine playing tennis with the big guys! That’s what happened recently to Randy Hopson, during the Played with Strings tennis exhibition and concert at the ATP Tour.
Randy was one of the ball boys and when tennis pro Stan Smith heard him remark that he could play better, Stan handed him his tennis racket and Randy enjoyed a few volleys with Brian Gottfried, ATP Tour director.
Stan said he was tired and needed a little rest, according to Randy.
Goldmans save school days memories
Sharon Goldman saved clippings from the School Briefs section of the Recorder when her children attended PV/PV in 2001. In the March 16 issue, the family is pictured dressed for a cultural event.
“We thought we were supposed to dress up for a culture event,” Goldman stated. “We were the only ones dressed up and we were put behind the Russia exhibit to answer questions. Of course, we were unprepared.”
The second clipping shows the twins in costume for a school play.
“The twins dressed up and sang,” Goldman stated. “They must have made quite an impression on the principal of PVPV/Rawlings at the time, who kept their bumblebee picture on her desk about 10 years after they graduated from that school.”
