Registration is underway for First Coast Cultural Center’s popular Kick StART art enrichment program, which develops higher-level thinking skills through art exploration. This 90-minute weekly afterschool program is slated to be held at six schools during both first and second semesters, and students will be painting, drawing, sculpting and making collage creations.
“We’ve updated our themes, and the students will be explorers — using critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity,” according to Kick StART manager Kimberly Sheridan. “These higher-order cognitive activities are skills students can use for the rest of their lives.”
During the first semester, students will focus on art elements and process-based skills with weekly themes such as Mirror Magic: Symmetry & Balance; All Together Now: Unity in the Wild; and Spot the Treasure: Emphasis in Art. The second semester dives into art history covering everything from Ancient Art and Medieval Times to Impressionism and Still Life.
“Each week, our artistic explorers will embark on a new adventure,” explains Silvia Romero, FCCC’s operations director. Romero says to look for Kick StART tables during school open houses. “We will be there and can’t wait to meet families who have a desire to feed into their child’s desire for art and creativity.” She adds that discounts are available for FCCC members.
