Saturday, March 7, was a historic day for Sporting Club Jacksonville. The men’s team kicked off their inaugural season in the USL Championship at home against Hartford Athletic. Sporting Jax lost the match 3-0, but Luc Granitur said there are good things to come.
“I think we are trending the right way,” he said.
The night was a little extra special for Granitur, who spent his college days at the University of North Florida (UNF).
“The scoreboard was not what we wanted, but for me it was special playing on my college field,” he said.
The men’s team had their season debut in front of a sold-out crowd with more than 10,000 fans in attendance.
Captain Kieran Sadlier said the team appreciated the support of the fans.
“It was a historic night for the club. We were disappointed we couldn't put on more of a show for the fans,” he said.
Sporting Jax led the match in possession with a 68.6%, but they struggled to take advantage of the chances that were presented.
“We don’t just want possession for the sake of possession. We want possession so that we can create chances and score,” said Head Coach Liam Fox.
Even though the team struggled to finish their chances, they have been improving since the preseason.
“I think all good things take time, and we just need to keep working on it. We’re still new, and we’re still building connections with each other,” said Sadlier.
Fox was encouraged by the improvements he saw and is ready for what is to come.
“These are learning moments for the group. We are going to get back to work in practice and continue improving every day,” he said.
The men’s team will return to Hodges Stadium on March 25 to take on Miami FC.
