St. Augustine Amateur registration opens

Posted

Registration opened on Wednesday, Aug. 26, for the 21st St. Augustine Amateur golf tournament, to be played Dec. 4-6 at the St. Johns Golf Club in southern St. Johns County. All proceeds for the tournament benefit First Tee — North Florida.

For tournament information, registration details and live scoring (beginning on the first day of competition), go to www.staugustineamateur.com.

The tournament is grateful for receiving a grant from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council and is partnering with the TDC once again to encourage visitors for St. Johns County and St. Augustine.

Last year’s event was covered thoroughly by Babygrande Golf (www.babygrandegolf.com) on Instagram, TikTok and youtube. (Final 2025 recap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVkHgaVdIjI). Babygrande Golf, a modern golf media and technology company dedicated to elevating junior, amateur and collegiate competition, is scheduled to cover the 2026 event also.

The event has been a World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) event for 20 years and is one of the few high-level amateur events scheduled for the last month of the year. The dates for the first weekend in December fall between seasons for college golfers and high-level juniors as they earn WAGR points and prep for the spring 2027 season.

In 2025, North Florida senior Adam Vermut sank a five-foot birdie putt on the final hole on a wet Sunday to edge first-round leader Jake Moffitt by one stroke. Vermut finished at 7-under-par 206.

Players who finished in the St. Augustine Amateur top 10 in 2025 fared quite well soon after their play in St. Augustine.

Vermut was named an Academic All-ASUN Conference choice last spring and has plans to turn professional this fall. Southern Miss freshman Moffitt won the mid-December 2025 International Amateur in Tampa by a record seven strokes, was the Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year and played in the U.S. Amateur.

Chattanooga’s Ward Harris (T5 in St. Augustine) was the low scorer for his team at the NCAA Finals in Carlsbad, California, and reached the Men’s North and South Amateur match play in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and the U.S. Amateur match play at Merion in early August.

UNF freshman Easton Oliva (T5 in St. Augustine) won the Florida Junior this summer. New Jersey junior Rory Asselta (T6 in St. Augustine) became the third-ranked junior in the Class of 2028, committed to reigning national champion Auburn in early August and finished T4 at the Junior PGA Championship in suburban Dallas where he was paired with Charlie Woods for the first two rounds.

The field quality has accelerated every year since a course renovation in 2022. In 2025, there were 45 players currently or recently ranked in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). The field, with players from age 14 to 38, included players from 20 states, nine countries and 47 different American colleges.

The maximum 84-player field is expected to include current NCAA Division I college golfers, nationally ranked junior golfers who have committed to play for NCAA Division I programs, elite mid-amateurs and international representation. There are 20 past champions (no repeat champions) since the event started in 2004, led by future PGA Tour players Peter Uihlein (2006), Zach Sucher (2008) and Blayne Barber (2009), Korn Ferry Tour players A.J. Crouch (2011), Jack Maguire (2012) and Sam Anderson (2020).

About the St. Augustine Amateur

In 2004, a dedicated group of golf enthusiasts founded the St. Augustine Amateur. Within two years, the tournament was recognized as a World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) event. Annually, the tournament features an international field of accomplished collegiate, junior and mid-amateur players. The tournament is open to male amateur golfers who have either met an exemption or applied and been accepted. Net proceeds, generated through sponsorships, directly benefit First Tee — North Florida, a local youth development organization, with more than $500,000 generated since 2004.
