ABET to hold auditions for the musical ‘Celebration’

The Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre (ABET) will hold auditions for the musical “Celebration” Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.

“Celebration” (1969) is a rarely performed musical by the writing team that created “The Fantasticks.” Employing a nearly bare stage, the musical fable explores the contrasts between youth and old age, innocence and corruption, love and ambition, and poverty and wealth.

A multi-ethnic cast is highly desired for the 10-12 cast members ranging in age from 20s to 50s. There are four “named” characters with solos. ABET will also be casting the ensemble or “revelers” who will contribute throughout the show – primarily singers and dancers. Between three and four men and women will be cast as ensemble members.

The vocal audition will begin at 2 p.m. Auditioners should prepare to bring with them 32 to 40 bars of piano sheet music from a Broadway show.

Once the vocal auditions are complete, auditioners will move on to the choreography section. It is recommended to bring clothes that are form fitting and move easily; dance shoes are also recommended. The choreography will be highly stylized and incorporate a variety of modern styles.

The final process of the audition will include a reading of short sections from the script in a cold-reading style, or a storytelling game will be played.

Resumes and headshots are helpful, but not required. Auditioners are asked to arrive 15 minutes early in order to begin filling out the audition form.

Performance dates for “Celebration” are: Jan. 20, 21, 27, 28, 29 and Feb. 3, 4 and 5. Performances and auditions will take place at the Adele Grage Cultural Center, 716 Ocean Blvd., Atlantic Beach.
