May is National Nurses Month, and Community Hospice & Palliative Care wants to highlight its nurses for the compassionate, skilled care they provide to patients and families across Northeast and North Central Florida.
Nurses are at the center of hospice and palliative care, offering not only clinical expertise but also comfort and guidance during vulnerable moments. At Community Hospice & Palliative Care, nurses serve patients in their homes, at the hospital, at long-term care facilities and inpatient Centers for Caring. Their goal is to help families navigate serious illnesses with dignity, compassion and support.
Heather Moore is the clinical director of nursing services at Community Hospice & Palliative Care, and she said being able to help patients through this journey is a blessing.
“We should be able to speak openly and outline just how we would wish to leave this world,” she said. “It is such a beautiful gift, and I am grateful that I am able to be part of it each and every day.”
Moore’s background as an ICU nurse has given her an even greater appreciation for the work that she does at Community Hospice.
“I used to leave difficult shifts in the ICU and go over and over in my head what we could have done,” she said. “I now lay my head down at night and am able to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I make a difference. I know each day a patient and/or family member is given the gift of knowing what is happening disease-wise and they are able to be the captain of their own ship.”
In hospice and palliative care, nurses often become a trusted source of support for both patients and their loved ones. Their role is to care for the whole person while supporting families every step of the way. They help manage pain and symptoms, educate families, coordinate care and ensure that each patient’s goals, wishes and quality of life remain at the center of every decision.
According to Moore, a nurse’s work goes beyond medical treatment.
“Nurses are the ones who are at the bedside at your first breath and with you when you take your last one,” she said. “We cry with you, laugh with you, get angry with you and never apologize for advocating for you.”
This National Nurses Month, Community Hospice & Palliative Care wants to recognize its nurses and nurses all over the world whose dedication and compassion help make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
