The Municipal Service District (MSD) of Ponte Vedra Beach had their monthly meeting on Monday, May 11, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
There were board members from Pointe 1 at The Pointe at Ponte Vedra in attendance to give an update on the pedestrian bridge at the south end of The Pointe.
The board at Pointe 1 has hired a contractor, and demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge is set to begin after Aug. 1. The targeted completion date for the project is Oct. 31.
The new bridge will have a composite surface instead of a wooden surface so that it will not be as bumpy. The board members of Pointe 1 are working with the contractor to come up with a way to build the bridge in such a way that any bikes, e-bikes included, will have to be dismounted and walked across on foot. The board said that currently people are going over the bridge on e-bikes at speeds of 30 miles per hour and up, and it is important to them to address this safety issue.
The residents of Pointe 1 will be paying for the majority of the project, but Pointe II, which is made up of 18 homes, is contributing financially, as is the MSD.
The bridge fell into serious disrepair in 2016 when it was severely damaged by a hurricane, and Chairman Kitty Switkes made a point to highlight the efforts of the residents at The Pointe at Ponte Vedra.
“I applaud you for saving that bridge; it has a lot of history,” she said.
The MSD board also announced that there will be a shredding event at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch library on Saturday, May 16, for St. Johns County residents only. The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon.
Residents are encouraged to bring old paperwork, bills and other confidential documents to be safely shredded on-site. Three-ring binders and cardboard will not be accepted.
