Fine’s Accreditation Choice and Innovation Act advances

On June 25, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed U.S. Rep. Randy Fine’s (FL-06) Accreditation Choice and Innovation Act, his first bill to pass out of committee. Aimed at overhauling the college accreditation system, this legislation cuts the bureaucratic red tape bogging down our accreditation process and hamstringing students.

The Accreditation Choice and Innovation Act implements one of President Trump’s executive orders, which stripped DEI mandates from accreditation and replaced them with quantifiable standards.

Only a handful of large accreditation agencies control which colleges qualify for federal student funding. This creates a bureaucratic monopoly that limits accountability. Fine says his legislation dismantles that monopoly by focusing on what helps students succeed. Metrics considered for accreditation under this bill could include graduation rates, loan repayments and lifetime earnings.

“As a father with a son preparing to head off to college next year, I understand how critical it is to get education right,” Fine said. “In the Florida House, I led the charge to expand school choice, ban radical indoctrination and put parents back in control. Now I’m working to make sure taxpayer dollars aren’t handed out to accreditors that base policies on woke garbage like DEI. Instead, this bill ties accreditation to student-focused and outcome-driven results. I’m grateful to Chairman Walberg of the Education and the Workforce Committee for his leadership on this issue.”

“Accreditors should be focused on the primary mission of our higher education system — improving student outcomes, not pushing radical agendas,” said Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (MI-05). “We must empower our students with a high-quality education, and that starts with fixing the accreditation system. The Accreditation Choice and Innovation Act allows for capable new accreditors, cuts red tape for institutions and tangibly aligns accreditation standards with real student success. I look forward to working with Rep. Fine to get this across the finish line.”
