Local JROTCs compete in Army-Navy game

Nease Navy JROTC’s second annual face off with St. Augustine High’s Army JROTC took place Sept. 19 in the Nease High School stadium in honor of Military Appreciation Week.

This flag football game consisted of two halves, and the one with the most points at the end won the prize of GEICO’s $1,000 sponsorship for unit events and morale, but also an epic trophy to prove it.

The game was long but well played by both teams, with good energy from both the crowd and the players cheering for the teams. While both fought hard and played to the very end, one came out on top. At the end of the game the score sat 26-18 in favor of Nease.

It was a hard-fought game, with the score tied for most of it, Nease got four touchdowns and twice got the extra point thanks to the help of cadets Cummings, Wagner, Thompson and other valuable players. Cadets Wagner and Cummings put the win on team spirit and hard work with Cadet Wagner saying, “The Army vs. Navy flag football game went extremely well, we won for the second year in a row, and it was a great opportunity for all of us to play in such a great game.”

As they cheered one another on, it brought energy to the crowd as they turned over the game, Cadet Cummings — who scored a goal-winning touchdown — also has something to say when he tells us, “I was excited to be back coming off a big injury, ready to come out and compete, and was pumped to score a few touchdowns along the way.”

The team was coached by the newest Nease NJROTC instructor First Sargent Kevin Davis.

When asked about how he led them to victory, he said, “The team went out, practiced hard, and with only three practices to be prepared, came out on top with a victory.”

Nease came home with the celebrated Army-Navy belt, so Nease came out on top for the second year in a row. But they didn’t just take home a trophy; they came back knowing that they can rise to the occasion and triumph with teamwork.
