Jacksonville Parks and Recreation will host its third annual Monopoly Tournament on May 31, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Main Library, 303 N. Laura St.
Registration began last month, and about 30 slots are still open to all Monopoly or board-game enthusiasts ages 12 and older. Registration is open through May 24. Entry fee is $5.
In the past, players have come from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Missouri. This year, some newcomers are visiting from Texas.
Two 75-minute preliminary rounds will be played in the morning. Points will be scored based on the number of players remaining at the end along with the player’s amount of cash and assets. The top 16 players will advance to the semi-finals after lunch, four tables of four. The winners of each of those tables will advance to the championship.
The championship competitors will win VISA gift cards (first: $150 and a trophy, second: $75, third: $50 and fourth: $25). All participants will walk away with a raffle prize. Those prizes include Monopoly-themed socks, blankets, bookbags and games, including a handful of the recently released “Jacksonville Edition” of Monopoly.
This is an official Hasbro recognized tournament.
