Rotary Club of Palm Valley: ‘The dinner club that actually does something’

Posted

The Rotary Club of Palm Valley was awarded First Place in the 2025 Best of the Beaches for Best Civic Club. The club now ranks among the top five Rotary clubs in the district for membership growth. Apparently, word is spreading that doing good and eating well is a winning combination.

The club recently wrapped up its annual Famously Fun Historic Raffle, and this year’s event was its most successful yet. Proceeds supported three outstanding charities:

  • V for Victory, which helps families battling cancer with transportation, home cleaning, meals and other services, making that journey a little easier.
  • S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue, which has saved more than 28,000 pets from euthanasia and placed them in loving homes.
  • Warrior Brotherhood, a veterans-helping-veterans organization assisting those facing physical disabilities, PTSD and homelessness.

Rotarians didn’t stop there. Alongside other local Rotary clubs and the student Rotary Club from Fletcher High School, members partnered with Hunger Fight to pack more than 25,000 meals in just two hours, proving Rotarians can move very quickly when food is involved, even if they are not the ones eating it.

The club also held a social gathering at Coastal Wine & Tapas in the Tasting Room. At the end of the tasting and tapas, it is rumored that members were speaking Spanish.

At a recent meeting, members were surprised by a visit from George Washington, who commemorated his February 4, 1789, presidential nomination and handed out his Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior. Some members noted that several Rotarians are still working on Rule No. 1: “Drink not nor talk with your mouth full.”

The Rotary Club of Palm Valley recently welcomed two outstanding women to its membership. Michelle King has rejoined Rotary, and Jennifer Cook is the club’s newest member. With their addition, women now outnumber men in the club. After all, Rotary has long benefited from the fact that women tend to arrive with more ideas, more enthusiasm and just enough common sense to keep a few of the men from forming unnecessary committees.

King is an account manager with Orkin Commercial Pest Control, part of a global company operating in more than 60 countries.

Cook recently retired from Marriott International after a distinguished career that included opening five Marriott properties.

The Rotary Club of Palm Valley meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at Marsh Landing Country Club. Members share fellowship, laughter and a commitment to making their community better — one meal, one project and one raffle ticket at a time.

Come for dinner. Stay for the service. And if George Washington shows up again, stay for dessert.
