Polio, a crippling and potentially deadly disease, still poses a threat in parts of the world — especially to children under 5. It has no cure, but it can be prevented with vaccines and even eradicated entirely.
For more than 30 years, Rotary has led the charge against polio through its PolioPlus program. As a founding partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has helped vaccinate more than 3 billion children in 122 countries, contributing more than $2.9 billion and countless volunteer hours.
Since the effort began in 1988, polio cases have dropped by 99.9%. Only Afghanistan and Pakistan still report wild poliovirus cases. Thanks to Rotary’s efforts, more than 20 million people can walk who otherwise might have been paralyzed. Rotary continues to face challenges such as misinformation, political instability and difficult terrain. But with commitment, resources and innovation, the end of polio is in sight.
To keep up the momentum, Rotary pledges $50 million annually — matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation. Rotary members also work hands-on to deliver vaccines, educate communities and raise awareness.
Here in our own community, Rotary clubs are playing an essential role by raising funds, spreading awareness and educating the public about the importance of vaccinations. Local events, fundraisers and public service campaigns are all part of the effort to support this global mission from right here at home.
Everyone can contribute to the cause — whether through donations, volunteering or simply sharing the message. Ending polio will be one of the greatest public health achievements in history, and with continued community support, we’re closer than ever to making it a reality.
