Sweet Pete’s prepares for holidays

Peter Behringer has been in the candy business his whole life.

In the ’80s, his mother started a family chocolate business which grew to open 32 locations. In 2010, Behringer and his wife started Sweet Pete’s in a beautiful historic Florida home. Behringer said they got creative and decorated the old home in whimsical décor and started offering birthday parties, field trips and candy classes. Behringer’s delicious candies soared in popularity, and in 2014, he opened a new location in downtown Jacksonville at the historic Seminole Club.

The Seminole Club has quite a history. It opened in 1901 and was one of the first buildings built after The Great Fire of Jacksonville. Behringer said several presidents have visited the historic building over the years. The building is 23,000 square feet and three stories tall, making Sweet Pete’s one of the largest candy shops in America.

When asked what Behringer likes best about his job he said, “It’s fun, every day is different.”

Sweet Pete’s often does field trips, and Behringer said it’s nice to see how happy and excited the kids are visiting the “candy mansion.”

Candy and the holidays go hand-in-hand. Behringer said that Santa Claus will be visiting Sweet Pete’s on Nov. 28-30 for a meet-and-greet and holiday pictures. Every child will also receive a North Pole Arctic Sundae to enjoy after their visit.
