There are currently a million Americans who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease with 90,000 additional cases per year. Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder that causes tremors, slowed movement, stiffness rigidity and more cognitive and noncognitive symptoms.
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time when special attention is given to this incurable disease. During recent years many drugs have been created to help the patient control the symptoms. However, the relief these give the person with Parkinson’s is temporary.
Parkinson’s is a progressive condition. Some people with Parkinson’s experience slow progression and can maintain a steady livelihood, while others progress at a faster pace. Each case is unique with different symptoms.
Jax Hope is a local organization that gives hope to people with Parkinson’s. It does this by providing local resources, supporting support groups in the Jacksonville area. It also assists in starting exercise programs for people with Parkinson’s. Jax Hope also hosts educational events and have a golf tournament each year to help fund these programs.
On May 3 in Fleming Island, Jax Hope will hold an educational symposium, focusing on Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia and other movement disorders. Several neurologists specializing in movement disorders have been invited. There will be entertainment and food, and beverages will be served. This event is free and open to everyone, but registration is required.
