Tides & Tails offers good time for pets, owners

The Jacksonville Humane Society attempted something different with its Tides & Tails event and it turned out to be a big hit for all those involved.

The event was held Oct. 8 at One Ocean Hotel & Resort in Atlantic Beach and was designed in a way that both pets and their owners could enjoy equally.

It was also one of the first events the Humane Society has put on that’s open to the public since the pandemic.

“Everyone that showed up was happy to just be out again at an event,” said Theresa Scordo, chief development officer with Jacksonville Humane Society.

According to Scordo, it was the first time in years they had done an event like that for both pets and their owners, which is also why they chose One Ocean as the host site, because it is a pet-friendly hotel.

“It was great for our followers at the beach, because we hadn’t done an event at the beach in a long time,” Scordo said.

There were more than 40 dogs and their owners that attended the event, which raised roughly $20,000 for the organization’s pet health center.

The Humane Society’s animal hospital strives to offer affordable care to pet owners and without regard to income status.

If paying for veterinary care is an issue, the organization’s website says that it will provide options to figure out the best plan to make sure pets get the medical attention they need.

One of the unique ways the event catered to both owners and their pets was by having a treat bar for both to indulge in.

Scordo hopes that it is the start of having more events at the beach in the future.

“We’re really excited to do more ‘Yappy Hours,’” Scordo said.
