‘Crossing the Threshold of Self’ at Florida Mining Gallery

“Crossing the Threshold of Self,” a solo show featuring artist Jason John’s latest paintings, will open Sept. 30 at Florida Mining Gallery.

John, a realist painter, works with imagery in his oil paintings that discuss and comment on identity, space and composition in an almost abstract way, building his compositions through an understanding of how color, form and space alter the viewer’s dialogue with the painting.

John has exhibited his work across the nation, including solo exhibitions at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, Texas Tech University and at the Sylvia White Gallery in Ventura, California. His work was included in “Get Real: New American Painting” at MOCA Jacksonville, a survey of contemporary realist painting in the United States. He is also an assistant professor of painting in the University of North Florida Department of Art and Design.

John holds a BFA from Kutztown University and an MFA in painting and drawing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The show’s opening reception will take place Friday, Sept. 30 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. An RSVP-only artist’s talk will take place at 6 p.m. Email info@floridamininggallery.com to RSVP.

Florida Mining Gallery is located at 5300 Shad Road in Jacksonville. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (904) 425-2845.
