Butterfield Garage Art Gallery has named Carolyn Overstreet as its Artist of the Month for January.
For as long as she can remember, Overstreet has been creating art in some form or another, whether it is in painting, sketching or baking cakes. She is particularly drawn to water and ocean scenes.
“I remember the first time I tried to draw the ocean as a child; I loved it then, and I love it even more now,” she said.
In 2024, Overstreet created a Facebook page to chronicle her art adventures with her assistant, “Miss Maybelle” (her 3-pound Yorkshire terrier). Her favorite medium to paint with is oil, and she loves painting shrimp boats.
“After raising children and caring for aging parents, I returned to my love of painting,” she said. “I am inspired by the beauty of the beach, where I find rest, peace and renewal. The color and movement of the water, clouds and sand draw me in. I try to capture all that I feel on the canvas of my paintings.”
In describing her outlook, she quotes John 16:33: “These things have I spoken unto you that in Me you might have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Overstreet’s exhibit opens on First Friday Art Walk on Friday, Jan. 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King St., St. Augustine.
