Claire Seibly, who lives on San Juan Drive came before the Ponte Vedra Municipal Service District to bring to their attention that more and more residents along San Juan are putting up stakes in the portion of their yard near the street that is the right-of-way.
According to Seibly, she has seen more and more people putting them up because a neighbor is having construction done or having a party, and they are trying to prevent someone from parking on their property.
“However, they’re leaving them,” Seibly said. “I’ve called the county, and they’re not allowed to do that. It’s a code violation.”
She stated that the stakes are just one of the things people use, as some homes use golf cart path markers or rocks along the side of the road.
“You are correct that they are not allowed to put them in the right-of-way, and a lot of them have been taken down on the (Ponte Vedra) Boulevard,” MSD chair Kitty Switkes said.
Switkes advised Seibly to provide her with the properties in question and she will pass them along to code enforcement to look into further.
“I don’t really want to be ‘that’ neighbor, but it really does bother me in a neighborhood like this to have that,” Seibly said. “It adds insult to injury for someone like me, who’s already upset about not being able to park on my street (due to no parking ordinance in place).”
MSD trustee Mickey White wanted to clarify that the board does not handle zoning enforcement and directed Seibly or any residents with concerns moving forward to the proper channels to effectively handle such issues.
“If you want that changed, we are not the body to come to,” White said. “You call zoning enforcement to have them do it. We’re not here to write up things to submit to the zoning department, I don’t think that’s in our charter and it’s not our primary role. If Kitty wants to volunteer as a private individual to do that, that’s fine.”
In other news, Switkes informed the board that a memorial bench honoring Carl Bloesing Jr. was placed at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, and it is visible from Solana Road and Golf View Circle.
Bloesing Jr. was an active member of the community since moving to Ponte Vedra in 1972 and served stints as president of the Ponte Vedra Community Association and president of the Ponte Vedra Beaches Coalition.
“It looks a little puny there right now because there’s no landscaping, so I’m going to put together some plan to help balance it out,” Switkes said. “Some greenery around it would look a lot better.”
The bench is also located at a school bus stop.
