Sharks claim bridge trophy against Panthers

The opening of Ponte Vedra High School seven years ago created a natural and keen sports rivalry—the Ponte Vedra Sharks against the Nease Panthers. The two schools, located with a few miles of each other, have meet on the gridiron annually since then for the coveted Battle of the Bridge trophy.

The Panthers took home the first Bridge trophy by virtue of a 22-7 victory over the Shark underclassmen but Ponte Vedra’s 34-7 win the following year gave the Sharks possession of the prize and they have not relinquished it since.

Ponte Vedra won the battle again Friday night at home 17-3 in a game that was closer than the score would indicate.

The Sharks took the early 3-0 lead with a 37-yard Chris Howard field goal on their first possession of the game. Nease responded quickly with a 50-yard pass play to gain a first down at Ponte Vedra’s 24-yard line the but couldn’t convert after Andrew O’Dare and Aleks Djukic combine to sack Panther QB
