The Discovery School launches Minimester

The Discovery School, located in Jacksonville Beach, launched a new program called Middle School Minimester at the start of 2026. They launched this program as a reminder that learning can be exciting, hands-on and inspiring.

The middle school students at The Discovery School participated in Minimester, a week dedicated to immersive, real-world learning experiences, from Jan. 6 to 9.

“Minimester reimagines the classroom by providing students with the opportunity to explore their interests, develop practical skills and learn directly from professionals in the community. Designed to spark curiosity and deepen engagement, the program celebrates the joy of learning in ways that go far beyond textbooks,” said Mariya Stephenson, social media and public relations coordinator.

During Minimester, students selected one of three areas to explore. They were able to choose from sports, technology or a hands-on cooking experience, in partnership with local organizations and experts.

The students who selected sports were given the opportunity to train alongside the Jacksonville University rowing team. Students learned proper technique, fitness fundamentals and the mental focus required for success both on and off the water.

In collaboration with Jax Cooking Studio and The Plantation Club, the students who showed an interest in culinary arts rolled up their sleeves to explore the world of food. Students learned kitchen safety, nutrition and essential cooking techniques while preparing dishes under the guidance of professional chefs.

For the students interested in technology, the Discovery School partnered with Anuvision Technologies so they could immerse themselves in technology-forward learning. Students studied coding, hardware, digital systems and problem-solving.

There was something for everyone during Minimester, which will be a new tradition at The Discovery School.

“Middle School Minimester reflects The Discovery School’s commitment to innovative education and meaningful community partnerships. By connecting learning to real-world experiences, students gain confidence, discover new interests and see firsthand how education applies beyond the classroom,” said Stephenson.
