Through art, “BRAject” fought back against breast cancer

What began as a spark of creativity from Ponte Vedra Beach resident Marlene Scheer has blossomed into a powerful expression of hope, healing and advocacy. “BRAject: Artrageous Bras for a Cause” is more than just an art exhibit, it is a bold, life-affirming celebration of survivorship and solidarity that blends artistry with advocacy in the fight against breast cancer.

A partnership between Scheer and Marica Pendjer, president of Pink Ribbon Jax, has helped elevate BRAject from a local idea to a regionally recognized campaign for awareness and breast health access.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said Scheer. “It’s art, it’s awareness and it’s deeply personal for so many people.”

Since its launch in October, BRAject has toured the Jacksonville area, showcasing 109 bras transformed into works of art — some wearable — by artists, breast cancer survivors and community members from across the country. Each bra tells a story — of courage, remembrance, and the unbreakable strength of those affected by this disease — while building awareness and raising funds for vital breast imaging services.

“BRAject is an experience,” said Pendjer. “It sparks conversation, honors the battles of countless families and literally helps save lives.”

At the heart of BRAject is a mission to raise awareness and expand access to life-saving breast imaging services.

A single $300 donation provides one screening mammogram for someone who might otherwise go without. That’s one life potentially saved, and an entire circle of family and friends saved from loss.

Though the tour has wrapped up, donations are still being accepted. To support this initiative or learn more, go to pinkribbonjax.org.
